The cave paintings, discovered near the village of Karakol in Altai, Russia, depict figures with horns and feathers on their heads. They were discovered in 1985 in a remote location and have already been analyzed. Scientists at the Kurchatov Institute in Moscow are more fascinated by the use of red.

Painters apparently knew how to perform a chemical reaction to create the exact shade they wanted by varying the heating temperature. Roman Senin, head of the synchrotron research department of the Kurchatov Institute, said: We determined the gradual composition of the pigments, ie the structure of the Crystal lattice of the individual grains of the dye.

Some structures are not typical of natural samples, but are the product of heat treatment. Simply put, the primitive artist warmed the mineral to a certain temperature to get the color he needed. Along with the rocks, the tribes painted their dead with the same colors. Red dots were found under the eye sockets and traces of a black and silvery mineral were discovered in the eyebrows. The complete results of the new study will be presented at the 43rd International Archeology Symposium in May 2020 in Lisbon. The paintings date back to the beginning and the middle of the Bronze Age and represent mysterious alien figures.
