The images obtained by the Curiosity rover, seem to show the presence of fungi that bloom on the surface of Mars.

A group of NASA-JPL scientists through a study that has just been published in the journal Astrobiology and Space Science Reviews, said the discovery has yet to be confirmed. The research exposes incredible images showing algae, lichens, microbial mats and Martian mushrooms. This photographic evidence of life forms growing on the red planet, if confirmed as such, would revolutionize our understanding of extraterrestrial life.

Dr. Regina Dass, of the Department of Microbiology at the Faculty of Life Sciences in India, and co-author of the study, said: “There are no geological forces on Earth that can produce hundreds of sedimentary structures that have forms of mushrooms, stems and clusters covered by what appear to be spores from the surrounding surface.

In fact, fifteen specimens have been photographed by NASA through the Rover, and these grow in the Martian soil in just three days, “the expert said.

And even if we assume that the Martian conditions for crops are better underground, it is not known how this potential life, if it were, could sprout on the surface. The controversial study has not yet passed the in-depth examination by the scientific community. The editors of the journal in which the study has already been published say that six independent scientists and eight editors have been consulted previously. Only three of them did not agree with the results. Other scholars proposed an alternative explanation, saying that it was more feasible that those identified as “mushrooms” were actually hematite spore (a form of iron oxide), which had already been detected and photographed before as evidence of Mars’ watery past. However, the alternative explanation is mentioned in the published study itself, making the following comparison in an attempt to refute it and discard it as such: Now we just have to wait for the search to be confirmed.
