Fifty thousand square meters between the Regio V and IX open to visitors thanks to the restoration work and safety provided by the Great Pompeii project. A job lasted fifteen months which affected roads, sidewalks, two domus – that of Obellius Firmo and Marcus Lucretius Frontone – and the little brothel, featuring never before seen erotic frescoes. But not only. During the fact of restoration work, the researchers were able to bring to light an entire area – until this unknown time – in which two buildings have been identified, one residential and one commercial plant that over time underwent a change of intended use for bakeries (pastrinum) to fullonica, the workshop that dealt with wash and remove stains from his clothes. On the way Nolana, in one of its perpendicular streets, is the abode of the second century BC, attributed – thanks to electoral inscriptions found during excavations – Marcus Lucretius Fronto. Although small, the building boasts a rich and decorations complex with images of heroes and mythological characters that refer to the social status of the owner. Of elegant black decor with paintings of landscapes and seaside villas, alongside the major paintings.
Bacchus, Ariadne, Venus and Mars, are some of the gods on the walls of this domus. In the rear, however, recognize the service quarters with kitchen, latrine and several living rooms. On one of these, five skeletons of adults and three children were recovered, crushed by the roof collapse that destroyed the city at the end of the first century A.D. The domus Obellius Firmo opens on the south side of the road of Nola, in Regio IX. Four large columns in tuff – over seven meters tall – and cartibulum (table) in place alongside all’impluvium marble (bath water collection) are input to the center. Also a safe in iron and bronze, however, a symbol of the wealth of this important aristocratic family Pompeian, stands out among the visible objects in the atrium. Then on the background, a large peristyle surrounded by Doric columns before the oecus (boardroom).
