Nazca lines, definition and study. A-Z Index of Cognitio.

The Nazca lines are geoglyphs, lines drawn on the ground, the desert of Nazca, an arid plateau extending for about eighty kilometers between the towns of Nazca and Palpa, southern Peru. More than 13,000 lines form more than 800 drawings. It is believed that geoglyphs have been traced during the bloom of Nazca Civilization, between 300 BC and 500 AC by the population living in the area: the Nazca. Although the lines have been spotted with greater clarity and frequency with the advent of line flights on the area, they are also visible from the surrounding hills, so that from the top of a hill in 1927 Toribio Mejia Xespe identified them with ceremonial paths (seques). Those who made a decisive contribution to the study of the lines of Nazca were the German archaeologist Maria Reiche.

She devoted passionately to the study and restoration of geoglyphs, and she has to discover some that had not been documented before. The Reiche suppose that the lines had an astronomical meaning, identifying the shape of the Monkey with the Big Bear, the Dolphin and the Spider with the Orion Constellation, and so on.

Reiche also claimed that the figures had been created by real technicians and engineers of the time. There are many hypotheses about how the Nazca have drawn lines, ranging from the most plausible to the more imaginative ones. Technically the lines of Nazca are perfect. The mileage lines are drawn with very small deviation angles. The designs are well proportioned, especially if we think about their size. These lines are the testimony of a great knowledge of geometry by the ancient inhabitants of this area. The figures found at Nazca, particularly in the Pampa of San José, are numerous and represent figures of animals, plants, humans, labyrinths and other geometric figures. There are more than thirty geoglyphs found to date in the Nazca Plain. Geometrical designs (hundreds of lines, triangles, and quadrangles) are more numerous than natural ones and occupy large areas.
