To capture the attention and imagination of astronomers is a star that is located between the constellations of Cygnus and Lyra: KIC 8462852.

His name is not very impressive, but it’s surprising characteristics. A scientific paper written by experts from various countries and still awaiting publication reports that the brightness of that star away 1500 years light and visible only with telescopes has the absolutely unprecedented changes. The observations carried out with the Kepler space telescope have shown frequent dips and brightness increases that do not respect any schema.

In one case it has actually decreased by 22% and you can not locate a periodicity of any kind between a drop and another. To understand what it is, initially it went by exclusion. It is known that when an extra solar planet passes in front of its star, a reduction of its brightness, but this is done with a definite rhythm and with more similar characteristics.

Also, a huge planet like Jupiter would cause a drop of only 1%, far away from what has been observed.

To filter the light emitted from KIC 8462852 is therefore something much bigger or much stranger. The authors speculate that it may be a debris cloud generated by a violent impact between planets. In this case, however, it should be observed due to a heating of the powders of infrared excess, but the phenomenon is absent. Another hypothesis is that of a number of comets that pass in front of the star, but also in this case it is difficult to think that, as they are numerous, they can get to block 22% of the light.

The article never mentions the aliens, but the main author of the research, Tabetha Boyajian Yale University, contacted an astrobiology expert, Jason Wright of Penn State University.

Although it is unlikely, a possible explanation – says The Atlantic – is that to orbit the star of the mega-structures are constructed from an advanced alien civilization, perhaps to capture the energy emitted from the star. In practice, the huge solar panels, a scenario so far relegated to science fiction books. To unravel the mystery we have to continue studying KIC 8462852, no holds barred.
