Kenneth Arnold was an American aviator, known for claiming to have spotted a UFO in the US in 1947.

On June 24, 1947, Arnold claimed that while on his CallAir A-2 was carrying out a search activity for a missing military aircraft, he observed nine unusual flying objects flying near Mount Rainier (Washington).

He described objects as intermittent lights as if they were reflecting the rays of the Sun, their process was “irregular” and they fly at a very high-speed.

Briefly, after his sighting, Arnold landed at Yakima (Washington), where he had a normal relationship with the Civil Aviation Administration. When he returned to Pendleton (Oregon) for refueling, he told his story to a group of curious listeners, including journalists. Several years later Arnold told reporters that “their motion was uneven, like a saucer thrown on the water”, from which the term “flying saucers” was coined. Another term with which commonly described the objects Arnold saw was “flying disks“.

Immediately after his sighting, he described objects as slim and flat, rounded to the front but cut into the back and ending with two tips, more or less like a saucer or a disk. For example, in an interview released on the radio two days after the sighting, he described them as “something like a pie dish that was cut in half with a sort of convex triangle in the back”. In an Army Air Forces (AAF) intelligence statement on July 12, Arnold referred to objects comparing them with saucers. At the end of the relationship, he made a drawing of the objects that appeared to him when he was near Mount Rainer. At a meeting with two AAF intelligence officers, Arnold first noted that one of the nine objects was different, being larger and with the back from the shape of a crescent. After the sighting, Arnold became a celebrity; released several interviews, wrote articles, and was also sent by a publisher to Tacoma to investigate another UFO sighting, the so-called Maury Island incident, even though he went on research at AAF.Maury Island incident, definition and study. From the 1960s he had little to do with the world of ufology, but in 1977 he attended the First Ufology International Congress held in Chicago on the occasion of the thirty-year-long sighting he had played.
