Easter island, definition and study. A-Z index of Cognitio.

The Easter Island is an island of the southern Pacific Ocean belonging to Chile. The Easter Island is a volcanic island formed essentially of three volcanoes, the Terevaka, which is the central part of the island, and two smaller volcanoes, the Poike in the eastern part of the island and the Raka Kau in the southern part. Other witnesses to the volcanic activity of the island are the Rano Raraku crater, the Puna Pau volcanic cone, and many volcanic caves, including lava tunnels. Rano Raraku, definition and study. The island is also predominantly dominated by Hawaiite and basalt castings that are rich in iron and show affinity with the magmatic rocks found on the Galapagos Islands.Hawaiit, definiton and study. A-Z index of Cognitio.

Etymological studies of the native language spoken by the indigenous population, archaeological finds and, finally, genetic analyzes to which the skeletons of the ancient inhabitants of the island were subjected, proved that they were undoubtedly Polynesians. The first to see the Easter Island was presumably the pirate Edward Davis, who spotted the island aboard his Bachelors Delight boat in 1687. However, not realizing that he had seen an island, he thought he had discovered the southern continent. Davis never moored on the island. The first to land on the island was the Dutch Jacob Roggeveen, on Easter Sunday 1722, the reason for which the island was baptized Easter Island. The big busts that are on the island are called Moai.Moai, definition and study. A-Z index of Cognitio.

There are 638 Moai on the island. Despite such research, their purpose is not known with certainty. The statues could represent indigenous dead tribesmen; according to popular belief, would allow the living to get in touch with the world of the dead. The Easter Island is the only one in the South Pacific area to have developed its own writing, called Rongorongo.Rongorongo, definition and study. Rongorongo’s writing was not completely decrypted and for many decades it has remained unfinished. Thanks to the studies conducted by the German Thomas Barthel and the discovery of a tablet containing a lunar calendar (now kept in the archives of the SS Hearts at Grottaferrata near Rome), the so-called Mamari tablet, it was possible to partially decrypt some symbols. There are 26 tablets written in Rongorongo all over the world, of which only a small part has been translated. The Rei Miro is a wooden petticoat typical of Easter Island culture. In the past, this was made with the wood of the Toromiro tree, and it was decorated on the two ends of two heads of carved animals.Rei Miro, definition and study. A-Z index of Cognitio.

The Rei Miro can represent both a bird and a boat. Some specimens also record engravings in Rongorongo and two holes to pass a small string that probably used to fix it. Whatever the function or meaning of this object is still unknown. The Rei Miro has also become the symbol of the Easter Island. In fact, the flag of the island is represented by a Rei Miro in red on a white background. The volcanic origins of the island have made it a considerable number of caves. The latter, formed during the final phase of the eruption, when the underground magma rivers began to cool, were used for many centuries by the indigenous population as places of worship. As evidence of this activity, many of them can still be found rock and rock paintings representing both the Birdman and the god Makemake.Makemake, definition and study. A-Z index of Cognitio.

According to some research conducted in the past, it is estimated that the population of the Easter Island during its peak period in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries was composed of approximately 15,000 inhabitants. Since the end of the sixties, the Mataveri airport has been expanded (the project was for this reason promoted by NASA as the Space Shuttle emergency landing site) the number of tourists who visit the island every year it has gone increasing.NASA, definition and study. The ability to reach the island by sea is very limited: the small harbor of Hanga Roa is unable to accommodate large cruise ships that must then lower their passengers off and then take them to the island by motorboats. To this is added that the sea in that area is often very moved so it is impossible to reach the island.
