Cosmology, definition and study. A-Z index of Cognitio.

Cosmology is the science that has the object of studying the universe as a whole, which tries to explain in particular origin and evolution. In this sense, it is closely related to cosmology as a branch of philosophy. In an ontological sense, this has the task of correcting or expanding the myriad of metaphysical or religious theories on the origins of the world. In the Western world, the first cosmological theories with some scientific foundations were elaborated by astronomers and philosophers of ancient Greece.Ancient Greece, definition and study. The advent of Jewish Revelation led to original contributions to the cosmological debate.Jewish revelation, definition and study. A-Z index of Cognitio.

These contributions focus mainly on the question of time, perhaps as a constant unknown. Deriving from Judaism, he recovers the idea of a universe created by God, which then has a principle and will have an end. It was only in the sixteenth century that Copernicus proposed the Heliocentric system, which finally took over in the seventeenth century, thanks also to Galileo’s work: according to this theory, the Sun is immobile in the center of the Universe, while the Earth and the other planets orbit around it.Copernicus, definition and study. Meanwhile, in 1785 Herschel had discovered that the distribution of stars on the celestial vault is not uniform, but that in the circular band known since antiquity as Milky Way their number is much higher than elsewhere.Milky Way, definition and study. A-Z index of Cognitio.

This suggested that the Sun was inside a disc-shaped star system that was called the Galaxy. It can be said that contemporary cosmology was born between 1915 and 1929: in fact, Einstein published the first article about the theory of general relativity in 1915, while in 1929 Hubble discovered his famous law, which implies that the Universe is in the expansion.Einstein, definition and study. The idea that the universe has started has led to the formulation of the Big Bang theory, or that the universe was born from a gravitational singularity in which all space-time and matter of the universe were concentrated.Big Bang, definition and study. A-Z index of Cognitio.

The most important problem that afflicts the Big Bang model is currently that of the so-called obscure energy. Indeed, at the end of the nineties, some supernovae observations have shown that, contrary to what was expected, the expansion of the universe is not slowing down, but accelerating. Cosmology, in a philosophical sense, is a branch of philosophy that deals with the world (ie the cosmos) understood as the totality of all phenomena in space and time, investigating its ultimate causes, meaning, ontological structures and various other aspects.
