In an experiment designed to see if artificial intelligence could be used to discover extraterrestrials, AI detected an unusual “square structure” inside a “triangle” on Ceres, a dwarf planet found in the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter. The result of this visual experiment questions the usefulness of these algorithms for alien life research projects such as SETI.

Ceres is the closest dwarf planet to the Sun, which gained fame a few years ago thanks to one of its craters, Occutor, where astronomers have noticed some bright spots. Their mystery has been solved thanks to Dawn probe NASA, which closely examined the mysterious craters and spots that are constituted by volcanic ice and salt deposits. At one of these points, researchers from the University of Cadiz saw strange geometric shapes. This led them to conduct an experiment: compare the way humans and machines recognize planetary images in order to understand if AI is able to detect the “technological signatures” of probable extraterrestrial civilizations.

But there is another aspect of the problem. If a neural network identifies something that our mind cannot understand or accept, will it be able to go beyond our consciousness in the future and open the door to that reality for which we are not ready? What if the mysterious square structure and the triangle in the Ceres crater were of artificial origin?

So far, the search for extraterrestrial civilizations is without AI. So, Yuri Milner’s revolutionary project last year concluded an agreement with a complex of VERITAS reflector telescopes. Astronomers will search for pulses lasting a few nanoseconds, which indicate the presence of space beacons. However, ufologists are convinced that some planets of the solar system, asteroids and comets have been exploited for mining by very advanced extraterrestrial civilizations.
