Ararat mount, definition and study. A-Z of Cognitio.

Mount Ararat is the highest mountain in Turkey (5.137 m), located in eastern Turkey on the border between the Agri and Agdir region, 22.5 km north of Dogubeyazit, in the territory that historically had belonged to the  Armenia;

For in the Armenian language Ararat means “Creation of God” or “Place created by God”. In Turkish, instead, his name means “Mountain of Pain”; The province itself, Ağrı, means “pain”. The Ararat is an active volcano layer with three eruptive events in the historical period, the last of which was observed on July 2, 1840. The summit is always snow-covered with glaciers. According to his orogeny, he was born during the clash of African plates against Asiatic. According to the Bible, Noah landed on its peak after the universal Great Flood, unleashed by God to punish men.

Legend has it that Noah’s Ark is still on the mountain, as reported by some travelers, including Marco Polo.

From the XIX century, some explorers ventured on the mountain to the Ark, including astronaut James Irwin and engineer Angelo Palego. On some photographs of the mountain, there is a strange unidentified object that some biblical scholars hypothesized as the remains of the Noah’s Ark, the object is known as the anomaly of Ararat, but the position of the mountain on the border between two nations Politically hostile makes it difficult to access. Ararat’s scarcity of geological Knowledge contrasts with the fact that it is in one of the world’s most volcanic interest areas, as it is linked to a very particular geodynamic context, linked to the closure of the Tetido paleo-ocean.

For scientists this is a very interesting situation because it is precisely in these areas that an oceanic plate disappears slowly between two continental plaques; The oceanic crust tends to sink below the continental one because of its greater specific weight, progressively consuming as subduction proceeds. When total ocean consumption is consumed, and the two continental plates that delimited it come into contact, what is technically termed “Tether Closure” occurs. This geodynamic change has important repercussions on the kind of magmatism that develops on the surface, and this is why for the field scholars, such as these, play a fundamental role in understanding the mechanisms that bind the tectonic to the various types of magma emitted. The Ararat is a volcanic relatively (geologically speaking) volcano, since its activity began 1.8 million years ago and seems to have been active up to 10,000 years ago. We know so little about this volcano, which is still unclear whether it is active or not: there are, however, historical testimonies that report recent activities. It seems that a powerful explosive eruption occurred in the II-III century BC. In addition, written sources suggest that the strong earthquake of magnitude 7.4 that disrupted eastern Turkey in 1840, and that the population described it as being accompanied by a giant landslide that detached itself from the Great Ararat, and that it changed profoundly morphology, both Was actually another violent eruption of this volcano.
