Abydos, archaeologically speaking, original article by Alessandro Brizzi.

Abydos is one of the oldest cities in Upper Egypt.

Egypt, definition and study. A-Z index of Cognitio.

Egypt

It is about 11 km west of the Nile. The name conventionally pronounced Abdju means Temple Hill, as it was believed that in that ancient city, in the symbol temple of the hill, the head of Osiris was preserved as a version of God’s myth.

Abydos, along with Heliopolis, was one of the two holy cities of ancient Egypt. The origins of the city are lost in prehistory; surely it exists already in the era, being the capital of Upper Egypt, as are the finds of tombs and the first findings on the presence of the temple.

Kingdoms of the I Dynasty and some of the II Dynasty are buried at Abydos, which also rebuilt the temple.

Old Kingdom

The cult of Osiris, in its various forms, began with the XII dynasty and became more important later to obscure all the other cultures. The Osiris feast took place on 2 September. The main temple of Abydos has undergone nine, or perhaps ten, reconstructions in a period of time ranging from the I dynasty to the XVI dynasty. The funeral temple of Seti I was erected with a completely new foundation less than one kilometer south of the former. The one erected by Seti I is known as the great temple of Abydos. The temple was erected to worship the ancient sovereigns, whose necropolis was in its walls. The long list of kings of the main dynasties carved on a wall is known as the Abydos Table and is one of the main sources used to rebuild the sequence of sovereigns of ancient Egypt. The temple also includes seven chapels, with vaulted ceilings, dedicated to the worship of the king and of the main gods, including Ptah and Amon. In the back there are large rooms connected with the cult of Osiris from which probably came to the hypogeum, erected by Merneptah for the celebrations of mysterious cults.

The adjacent funeral temple of Ramesse II, erected by him, is much smaller and simple as a plant with the difference of having decorations, of which the lower parts remain, linked to historical facts, such as the Poem of Pentaur. Another religious building, very important, is the Osireion, located at the temple of Seti I, which is formed by both an underground structure and an extension on the surface. It contained Osiris’s head and was the most important center for the celebration of the so-called “Osiris Mysteries”. A good room hosts the sarcophagus of the kings.
