Located on the west bank of the Nile between Giza and Saqqara, it preserves the remains of six solar temples of the 5th dynasty. The site was discovered in the early nineteenth century when the appearance of finds from the Old Kingdom, attracted the attention of the archaeologists on Abu Gurab, where already the Napoleonic expedition and Lepsius had reported the presence of ruins.

Solar Temple of Niuserra

It was built on commission from Setibtawy, the sixth ruler of the 5th dynasty. The exact dating of his kingdom is unknown to us. This ruler is also known to have built a pyramid and a burial chamber in the archaeological complex of Abu Sir, while the Abu Gurab complex, which had the name “He who gladden the heart of Ra” was probably built-in a more late in his reign.

Solar temple of Userkaf

The solar temple of Userkaf, the first ruler of the 5th dynasty, is by far the oldest temple found; among its ruins was found a head of Userkaf, among the masterpieces of the art of the time.

An intriguing mysterious clue, among the many left by the Egyptians themselves, indicating that in the 3rd millennium BC. in Egypt it would have been possible to make accurate observations of the motions of the Sun and the Moon, however, it would seem to come from Abusir, a couple of kilometers north of Saqqara, where some kings of the V Dynasty, presumably to highlight their direct descent from Ra , they raised temples consecrated to the cult of the Sun distinguished by their funerary complexes, but equally grandiose, to which they were closely related.

After having consecrated them, in fact, the solar temples poured daily offerings to the funerary ones, as indicated by documents found in the archives of the funerary temple of Neferirkara that refer to deliveries from the solar temple and movements of food between the two temples.
