Puma Punku in Bolivia, is one of the most intriguing and mysterious archaeological sites of antiquity. Positioned Andean plateau at a height of 4000 meters, some estimate that those Pumapunku are among the oldest ruins of the Earth. In the Aymara language, its name means “The door of the Puma”, however, no one knows who designed and built Puma Punku, it what was its use. The mystery of Pumapunku remains that both archaeologists and academic historians, and researchers “alternative”, which investigates the hypothesis advanced prehistoric civilization or contact Ancient Astronaut no land. Puma Punku is part of the larger monumental complex of Tiahuanaco (Tiwanaku), a large archaeological site near the south-eastern shore of Lake Titicaca and about 72 km west of La Paz, the seat of the Bolivian government. Undoubtedly, the city precedes the Inca presence in this part of South America.

In local legends, it is said that the nearby temple of Tiwanaku was built to commemorate the arrival in Puma Punku the gods came from the sky. The impenetrable mystery of Puma Punku is the precision and complexity of the structures that pervade the ruin: finely carved doors and heavy stone blocks up to 130 tons perfectly smooth, without the slightest trace of chisel marks. But what most perplexing archaeologists and engineers is the presence of mysterious stone modules in the shape of “H”, all the same size. The impression one gets is that of serial production, as if you had used a mold. The sanding block is incredibly smooth, the virtually perfect millimeter ruts and grooves in the corners of the stone blocks do envision a sort of interlocking assembly, some modular construction system, machined so precisely as to be joined to each other in different ways. The blocks were joined and fixed with the use of metal staples. The Pumapunku blocks are made of granite and diorite. The diorite is a rock of volcanic origin lasts almost like a diamond: the quarries of diorite closer to the site are more than 60 km away.

The other great mystery that hovers over the ruins of Puma Punku and Tiahuanaco is the mystery on their end: looking at the ruins, there is an impression of destruction occurred following a catastrophic event. In the case of Pumapunku the ravages are even more extensive. In fact it is almost impossible to recognize the structure of the buildings, and there are only a few stones near to each other, while at Tiwanaku sporadically you can still see some walls. The city was already abandoned when the Incas conquered the area in 1470. However, the newcomers were able to incorporate Puma Punku and the rest of Tiwanaku into their empire and in their culture. The Incas believed that the city was the site of the coming of Viracocha, the god who had created the ancestral people then sent into the world to populate their territories and give rise to various human ethnic groups. The Incas had reconfigured the existing structures to fit their ritual activities.

When in fact the European conquistadors discovered the site, asked the Incas who had built Puma Punku getting this answer: “We have not even built us and our fathers. They built the ancient gods in one night”. The dating of the complex of Puma Punku is still a matter of debate among researchers, because, as you know, you can not run the 14-carbon dating of the stone. According to the dating results, the site would have been built between 500 and 600 BC The radiocarbon analysis was performed on the organic material of the lower layer and oldest of the Puma Punku site. However, there are many who believe the method to be extremely inaccurate. Some architectural features of the site, in fact, would suggest that it is a much older construction: to understand the age of Puma Punku have to look Tiwanaku. Thanks to more accurate astronomical instruments that today we have at our disposal, we can say that the actual date of Tiwanaku dates back to 12,000 years ago. And that should give pause to all of us to the true origin of civilization.
