Lima Peru, housed ancient pyramids? Travel Archeology. Ancient temples and pyramids in the heart of the city: there is no need to reach the Andes to know the history of ancient Peruvian civilization. Lima hosts a series of ruins, or ‘huacas’, testimonies of the earlier civilizations of the Incas. Ruins are scattered around the city: Huaca Pucllana is, for example, located in the center of the modern Miraflores district.Miraflores district

Miraflores is home to companies, hotels, restaurants and bars. Hardly so you would expect to encounter ancient ruins. Instead, here is the historical treasure of Huaca Pucllana.Huaca Pucllana

Built about 1500 years ago as a ceremonial center, these ruins have only been discovered recently. Archaeologists continue to dump ancient artifacts (even a mummy!). The large pyramid and ancient brick buildings are in sharp contrast to the surrounding modern surroundings. At night the ruins are enchanted and become the perfect setting for a dinner.huaca pucllana lima by night

Huaca Pucllana’s first stones were cut in the 5th century BC, about a thousand years before the Inca‘s construction of Machu Picchu.Machu Picchu

Huaca Pucllana means ‘sacred place for games’, so probably the area was destined for ritual games. The original population lived here for 300 years until the Wari conquered the city.Wari conquered the city

This sacred complex once included 16 acres and about 44 temples. Only a small part has been brought to light, including 7 pyramids and many smaller buildings. Unlike most famous cities such as Machu Picchu and Caral, Huaca Pucllana was not built with large granite blocks, but with clay and brickwork. If you look closely, you will notice that the bricks are positioned in a slightly crooked way. This is not about inattention: the ancient builders volunteered the bricks to make them earthquake-resistant. The fact that these temples have stood for 1500 years shows their level of experience.
